Bandhwari landfill has become one of Asia’s tallest garbage mountains. Nearly 35 lakh tonnes of waste from Gurgaon and Faridabad lay piled up on forest land, contaminating soil & underground water which invariably reaches our taps. A huge percentage of this waste is plastic waste. Even in this plastic waste, a major chunk is of plastic disposables.
So in the year 2018, a group of eco-conscious women of Malibu decided to start a crockery bank consisting of steel crockery. Funds were a problem since Gina, Seema, Laxmi, Rolly and Surabhi were already pitching in their own resources to run a Waste Management plant in the colony.
Together they approached Ranjan Agarwal (PD-14) who shared their concerns about the degradation of the environment.
Mr. Ranjan contributed 300 steel plates & glasses and the Crockery Bank took off. The first usage was by the Keertan Mandali for their Janmashtami Bhandara. They were so impressed by the initiative that they also contributed more utensils for the bank.
Soon the word spread and many other residents also started approaching the group for the crockery bank (which is free for everyone), for their functions. The only condition is that it needs to be washed before returning and any missing utensils be replaced.
The free crockery back saved people the money spent on disposables, the reusable utensils meant that no more plastics were getting added to the landfill. It’s a win-win for all.
So far, we have managed to save more than 10k disposables from reaching landfill. Our crockery bank has been used by other societies such as Wellington Estate.
We urge the residents to make use of the bank for their ceremonies. You will be doing a huge favour to Mother Earth. And saving some money too. Please contact the Federation office to avail the same.
