As the need for medicinal plants is increasing with each passing day, a residents’ group headed by Ex. HGS of DCWA (Sha-mmi Chandha and Ajay Kumar), conceptualized a plan called –Let’s make Def Col Healthier- by educating and involving residents who may use the benefits of these life-enhancing plants. Shammi Chadha, a diabetic patient himself, has a beautiful farm in NCR where he did his initial research about the benefits of medicinal plants for humans and cracked new species to safeguard and cure diabetes. The initial plan was to get the following plants:
1) Insulin Plants for Diabetic …7 out of 10 Indians are diabetic and taking regular medicines
2) Stevia Plants – Sugar-free tablets are made from this plant
3) Tulsi – 6 to 7 varieties of useful Tulsi plants for immunity and other benefits
Shammi Chadha and Ajay Kumar did a thorough survey of Delhi and nearby towns to find the best and the most reasonable plants from various nurseries to get the plants. Few were shortlisted and initial order for approx. 1000 plants was placed. One whatsApp group was created to facilitate the residents and park in charges for plantation of medicinal plants all over the colony. In a jiffy, more than 100 nature loving residents joined the group and started contributing to this noble cause with their respective orders. Poornima, who is a known social worker and nature-loving resident of D-146, volunteered to distribute the plants to residents and park committees. All the plants were received in the first week of August and were distributed and planted in various parks (more than 15 parks) in the colony. Insulin and stevia plants are now required by more and more residents after the buzz was created in the colony by this self-help group. Almost all the plants are now distributed and planted in the colony parks and homes. The second round has already started with the addition of more medicinal and useful plants (neem, amla, ajwain, imli etc.).
