On Karvachauth (1st Novem-ber), a young carpenter from Urban Clap came to my house for some work in my kitchen. He parked his new motorcycle just outside my house, under the tree. A few hours later when he finished and came out to depart on his bike, to his horror he found it smashed and lying on the ground. Tyre marks clearly showed how a vehicle has swerved onto the pavement and hit the parked bike. He phoned me and I immediately rushed home. I reported the matter to the RWA office and a security guard arrived but couldn’t do much. I spoke to a couple of drivers who were eyewitnesses and pegged the time at around 1:20 to 1:30pm. One driver said he saw a car hit the bike and ride off again. The broken headlight pieces of a car were strewn on the pavement along with the smashed tail-light of the bike. I went to my neighbours who had CCTV cameras facing the road and they were most helpful. Sahil Dhingra (H.no.422) went through his footage and we spotted the rash driver swerve to avoid an oncoming car, hit the bike and rush off again. Kanika Gupta (H.no.436) called me back to say the rash driver had nearly knocked down her maid en route to knocking down the bike. Dr. Reeti Sahni (H.no.445) was helpful too and even Kavita Aggarwal (H.no.437) called me the next day to say that she had tried but couldn’t get footage of the event. Thakur, our RWA security head, was useful. Eventually we found footage which showed that the car was a dark blue Baleno UP16DE5919. The owner is not a resident. The number and description of the car is with the RWA security and hopefully the culprit will be made to pay for the damage he caused. Though there was no damage to any person, the poor carpenter had to give his bike for repairs, could not earn his livelihood till he got his bike back and of course had to foot the repair bill to boot. Sad. For me, the event was traumatic but the silver lining was that I got to know some really lovely neighbours. The community spirit of 15A is as strong as ever!
