20 Years And Going Strong
For the past two decades, Seema Bahl, a resident of L Block, has had an annual tradition of Raavan-making on Dusherra and has turned it into a vibrant community event that emphasizes creativity, environmental responsibility, and togetherness. Each year, neighbourhood children come together to craft an eco-friendly Raavan, constructed from bamboo sourced from Seema’s backyard and adorned with recycled, low-cost, innovative, and homemade decorations. This year marked the 20th anniversary of this delightful tradition, making it even more special.
In response to the pandemic in 2020 and its aftermath, the group’s focus shifted towards sustainable practices. The participants learned about recycling and the importance of minimising pollution, abandoning traditional firecrackers in favor of innovative alternatives. Instead of bursting crackers, the children created balloon “crackers,” bursting them with toothpicks for an eco-friendly bang. Maximum material used is recyclable like newspaper. So after the Raavan is destroyed it all finds its way into compost pits, an added advantage and helps in promoting sustainable practices. This change resonated deeply and created environmental awareness among the little ones.
With the excitement building, mothers joined in the festivities, decorating the Raavan together and even organising a celebratory cake to commemorate this milestone. The Raavan’s construction takes four days, but each moment is filled with laughter and learning. Through this annual ritual, Seema has not only preserved a cultural tradition but has also promoted a sustainable, joyful, and eco-conscious Dusherra celebration.
