Queues Are Not My Thing
Our colony recently had their RWA organised Karwachauth mela. No, this article is not about that. I have mixed feelings towards that and therefore would refrain from writing about that. I am trying to talk about our tendency to jump queues, find shortcuts, not follow the rules, and find ways to make things convenient for ourselves even if that means inconveniencing others.
There was a food stall selling chaat paapdi etc. This had a coupon system. Pay at the counter, receive a coupon and present that at the food counter. However, there were some people who found this process to be difficult, cumbersome, time consuming, ‘not their style’, etc. They found paying the server directly and getting the food much easier. The server, as happy as he could get, was taking the cash and conveniently putting it into his pocket. I would not blame this on him at all.
There wasn’t too much crowd, the gentry was all our colony residents, coupons were handed out very promptly, there was enough food, and there wasn’t a time limit set for anything. Then why this kind of rush and behaviour? Why tempt the staff at the counters to cheat? If others have the decency and patience to follow the set pattern of doing things, why can’t we too? What makes us one step ahead of the others in this case? Why don’t we respect and follow the ways set to do things efficiently?
