All, including the government departments, the various agencies and the legislature know and understand that “Pruning of Trees” is an essential practice for maintaining the health and beauty of urban landscapes, ensuring safety, and promoting biodiversity. However, recent stringent laws and regulations surrounding tree management have made this process increasingly difficult for homeowners, landscapers, and municipalities alike. Laws have been enacted to protect urban trees, recognizing their ecological and aesthetic value. While these regulations aim to preserve tree canopies and prevent excessive cutting, they often impose strict guidelines on when and how pruning can occur. Permits may be required, and specific criteria must be met to ensure compliance, which leads to inordinate delays, as a result of which at times the trees die their own death by getting uprooted on their own because of a storm etc. Needless to say that the trees could survive in the event they are maintained well, just like one’s hair and nails are manicured and maintained. However, complexity of laws, rules, regulations hinder timely maintenance. Often, trees that are not pruned regularly can become overgrown, posing safety risks such as falling branches or obstructing visibility on roadways. Additionally, neglecting necessary pruning can lead to weakened tree structures. More often than not, the laws are a burden on residents, and, navigating these regulations can be frustrating. The need for permits and compliance checks can complicate straightforward maintenance tasks. While protecting trees is crucial, it’s equally important to find a balance that allows for responsible maintenance. As the importance of trees in urban environments becomes increasingly recognized, it is extremely important to ensure that regulations supporting their protection do not impede essential maintenance practices like pruning. The concerned must understand that striking a balance between safeguarding our green spaces and allowing for their care will ultimately contribute to healthier, safer, and more vibrant communities.
