A Threat to Our Green Lung
Yesterday morning, morning walkers at Ashoka Park were shocked to see an NGO unloading materials for a 15-20 day-long mela inside the park. This has caused wide spread concern and residents are demanding immediate action to stop this event.
Why Ashoka Park Must Be Protected
Ashoka Park is a 22-acre green lung and the only major green space for the residents of New Friends Colony, Khizrabad, Taimoor Nagar, and Zakir Nagar. In a city struggling with pollution, rising temperatures and shrinking greenery, this park plays a vital role in:
Providing fresh air and reducing pollution
Offering a peaceful space for residents
Keeping temperatures cooler in summer
Protecting local wildlife and biodiversity
Allowing a mela here will damage the park and set a bad precedent for future encroachments.
Major Concerns
No Emergency Access – The mela area has no direct road access , making it unsafe in case of a fire or medical emergency.
Traffic and Parking Chaos – The only access road is already congested. A large event will lead to traffic jams, illegal parking and safety risks.
Fire & Safety Hazards – High-tension electric wires near the site make it a major fire risk.
Environmental Damage – Large crowds will bring dust, noise, plastic waste and pollution, destroying the park’s natural beauty.
Parks Are for People, Not Profits
Parks should be used for recreation, nature, and community well-being —not for commercial events that harm the environment.
Our Urgent Appeal
We demand the National Green Tribunal (NGT) revoke permission for this mela.
We call on the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to stop this violation.
We urge the Fire Department to assess the safety risks.
Act Now – Save Ashoka Park!
If we allow this today, our green spaces will be lost forever. Raise your voice before it’s too late!
