Project Happy Monsoon “Desilting of All Rain Drains Before Rainy Season”

The long pending request to clear all the rain water drains by desilting much before the onset of monsoon was finally taken as a major project by the SDMC and DJB in May ’24. The Team of our SDMC councilor and MLA who is responsible for maintenance of sewers in the colony joined hands and planned this “Project Happy Monsoon”. The major issues faced by the residents are as follows:

• During the monsoon every year or even during pre-monsoon, most of the drains of colony get choked and start overflowing all over. The major reason is throwing plastic, bones and other garbage in the sewers by the restaurants and residents.

• There are many residents who have covered and blocked the rain water drains while constructing the basements or entrance of the houses which is resulting in zero flow of water during the monsoons. The areas near main market, clubs, Nallah Park are most vulnerable and always result in major water logging for the last one decade or so. Due to water logging on roads, it has almost become impossible for the residents to walk or even drive on roads; some fall due to pits and others also face injuries.

• The roads get damaged and as there are no funds for the colony to repair them, the condition of roads have gone from bad to worse with each passing year and residents keep begging to get them repaired; some of them even cave during the year; Mosquito breeding, rodents and other dangerous animals like snakes are seen every year.

What’s the master plan in the Project – Monsoon?

* A dedicated team of SDMC and DJB has been created as the task force for this monsoon 2024. This team will ensure cleaning of all the small drains in front of every house as well as the central Nallah to be cleared in May and June’24. 5-6 senior supervisors are appointed to manage the team’s work as well to provide them with infrastructure.

* 10-15 automated sewer cleaning machines will be deputed by the DJB and SDMC to clean these drains well before the monsoon. A weekly progress report by the task force supervisors will be submitted to the Councilor and MLA to plan action for the next week. In case of any issues or delays they will personally visit the locations and ensure timely compliance of all the activities.

* The residents will be educated not to throw plastic bags, bones etc in the sewer pipes to safeguard these drains from choking.

* Any defaulter found will be charged fines as well as official warnings. The SDMC will depute officials to open the rain water drains if blocked during the construction of a house.

Lastly, we at Samvada, request all the residents to please educate your domestic servants not to throw plastic bags in the service lanes or in the sewers. This small step will result in smooth water drainage this year and you will be able to enjoy the monsoon season with your family. Happy Monsoon!!
