As in the past many years, this event, organized by S Block Welfare Society, is a big hit and very popular with our block residents. It is perhaps the biggest such event in GK 1, with almost 40 mehndi artists in attendance. Most other blocks just have 4-5 mehndi artists on this day.
This event is organized every year a day prior to “Karva Chauth” in the spacious & lush green surroundings of S Block Park with “Shiv Mandir,” giving a perfect background to this most auspicious Hindu ritual.
The mehndi artists are in attendance from 3 pm onwards, but many ladies of the block assemble much before this time to avail of early service. Mehndi rates are highly subsidized at Rs 200/- per hand, whereas this year, “mehndi wallis” were charging up to Rs 2100/= per hand in the neighborhood M Block market.
In addition to the mehandi artists, SBWS organizes performances by professional “Garba” dancers, tambola, music, dandiya dances, a lucky draw, and a complimentary dinner for its members. Our CC members & ladies of the block enthralled the residents with mesmerizing dandiya dance performances on Bollywood foot-tapping music.
This year the flow of events was like; 3pm onwards-Mehendi artists,5 pm- Three rounds of tambola, 6.30 pm onwards- garba dance performances & dandiya dance by ladies of the block, 8.30 pm-onwards, complimentary dinner: & finally lucky draw at 9 pm.
VIPs who graced the occasion were Saurabh Bhardwaj, minister, Delhi Govt., and Shika Rai, our area councilor.
The whole ground was well-lit and decorated. More than 350 residents enjoyed a complimentary dinner of piping hot cholle bhature, rice pulao, and gulab jamuns along with masala tea.
The lucky draw had thirty-six very attractive prizes, all donated by our SBWS members & MC CC members. The most attractive ones were silver coins contributed by Diamanté Jewelers, S19 & an electric car provided for seven days by Sirish Gupta of S 372. Lucky winners were selected through a draw of lots by Saurabh Bhardwaj & lots of kids.
Mehndi activity continued till the wee hours of 20th Oct. Many ladies from neighboring blocks also enjoyed the facility. Security guards of SBWS were in attendance for the safety of our block ladies and mehndi girls. Our local beat officers provided all ground assistance.
