Plogging is a new global movement that originated in Sweden. The word ‘plogging’ is formed by combining the Swedish phrase ‘plocka upp’ (pick up) and the English word ‘jogging’.
Plogging was pioneered by Erik Ahlstrom in a modest way as he started cleaning up rubbish in the area where he practiced his sport. Soon, the wave swept all over Sweden.
Social media played a pivotal role in making plogging a global phenomenon. There are over 20,000 people a day in more than 100 countries that are involved in this activity at present!
The main reason for the popularity of plogging lies in its simplicity, sustainability and health benefits. The joggers step out for their jog, wearing gloves and carrying garbage bags; they pick up litter that is an eyesore in cities and natural spaces as they jog on.
The benefits from plogging are manifold. On the macro level, it keeps our cities somewhat litter-free. By collecting litter on the run, a plogger ensures that animals and plants ecosystems are safe.
Then, the plogger benefits from the increase in bone density and flexibility due to better oxygenation. It minimises the risk of arthritis and osteoporosis. The repeated bending down to pick up plastic wrappers and bottles makes the core muscles work along with the cardio that the jog provides.
Not only that, but plogging is also good for our body, mind and spirit. It results in a different kind of high when one helps to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste, even if it is minimal!
Plogging also builds a community of like-minded people who believe in the need to look after the place they live in along with their physical fitness! So folks, put on your joggers, wear your gloves and set out plogging!
