Onam, a vibrant festival in Kerala, commemorates the annual visit of King Mahabali, a legendary ruler celebrated for his just and benevolent reign. Occurring in late August or early September, Onam marks the beginning of the harvest season and lasts for ten days.
Onam emphasizes joy, festivities and communal harmony. This year, One Hamlet embraced its spirit with a variety of activities. Residents enjoyed the sight of women dressed in Kasuvu and off-white sarees with golden borders, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
A central feature of Onam is the creation of Pookalam, floral designs made from various types of flowers. These flower carpets, displayed in front of homes and public spaces, symbolise prosperity and welcome the king.
The Pookalam Competition as part of the celebrations saw participation from tower teams, who showcased their creativity with vibrant floral arrangements. For three hours, each team brought their positive energy, resulting in beautiful creations.
While all teams displayed impressive creations, Tower 6 was recognized as the best by non-Hamletian judges, ensuring fairness.
Another highlight of the celebration was the Onam Sadya, a feast served on banana leaves. This elaborate and yummy meal included a variety of vegetarian dishes, including rice, curries, pickles, and traditional sweets.
Almost 300 Hamlet residents’ enthusiastic response allowed them to savour authentic Kerala cuisine in the comfort of the clubhouse.
Hamletians also enjoyed traditional dances and drumming performances, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere.
Thanks to Uma Meghani (6242) and Shibu Chellappan (4212), whose meticulous planning with various tower representatives and their professional events team led to organizing and executing a beautiful celebration, making Onam a memorable event filled with joy, community spirit, and cultural appreciation.
The tower representatives, Prof. Nita Verma & the Cultural Committee, and the Facility in Charge, at the behest of the AOA, all helped in making the Onam celebration grand success.
