Block residents had the experience of sleepless night as there was no electricity for major part of the night. The reason was usual – transformer burst! The electricity goes off at the first drop of monsoon shower. Are we to understand that in this modern age of development a few rain drops play havoc with the distribution system or there is some carelessness involved on part of the organization which is billing people and increasing tariffs at will? Power cuts during rainy season are accepted by us as routine and we assume that supply has to go once the rain starts.
The transformers in our Sector are mostly covered with shrubs and bushes which grow wild during rainy season. While appreciation of greenery by government agencies is good but trimming and cleaning up of bushes near the transformers can prevent power cuts due to fault arising from the transformers. A concrete base for the transformers can reduce the risk of short circuiting in rains.
The RWA and the Authority take up trimming of the trees and weeding and pruning in the Sector but it seems that areas around the transformers do not come under any Authority! This is like a ‘no mans land’ and the foliage extends out onto the road. A few measures taken in the right direction can reduce the power outages happening due to faults.
