Noida Police & RWCS Organise Cyber Crime Awareness Meet, Sadly Few People Turned Up!

On 28th January 2025, the Cyber Crime Unit of NOIDA Police visited the RWCS office at 3 PM to share presentation on cyber crimes. Information on this was posted on RWCS Official groups only, and since it was a working day, barely 10 people attended the meeting. (contrast this with a nearby sector where, as per newspaper reports, some 150 people had participated.) The last time such a meeting was held was on a Sunday in May 2022 and had seen a dismal presence of 15 people.

Much like last time, the visiting police officials, led by Hemendra Kumar Baliyan, came prepared with a PowerPoint presentation but, seeing the low turnout, decided on a friendly talk. The words used were not corporate jargon or legalese but everyday language, and the team spoke about over a dozen ways that online frauds are happening. They also spoke at length about the measures one can take to prevent such fraud from happening. The team also shared the contact numbers of Cyber Cell and how to file a complaint in case one becomes a victim.

Baliyan said that frauds happen due to three reasons: Lalach (Greed), Laparwahi (Carelessness), and Darr (Fear).

The police said that since most of the financial information is available online or with banking institutions, data gets leaked. To register a complaint, people should call the number 1930 or 155260 within 24 hours for an effective resolution. People can also report on the Sanchar Saathi portal (https://sancharsaathi.gov.in) where one can report stolen mobiles and suspected fraud communication by clicking on Chakshu. One can even find out the number of mobile connections in one’s name.

The police asked for volunteers who will be trained as Digital Warriors who will be trained to increase awareness, prevent fraud, and help others too. They also said that they are looking for people who have a good social media presence (with at least 10,000 followers) and who will be specially trained and tasked with making videos/reels on social media.

Following are the contact numbers of the Cybercrime Team Sector 20 Police:

Hemendra Kumar Baliyan, Inspector Phone No: 8445543159 Varun Kumar, Sub Inspector No: 9457542913 Arvind Kumar, Sub Inspector No: 6392766413 Laxmi Narayan, Asstt Sub Inspector No: 6392766413 Shivani, Lady Sub Inspector No: 9012487832

Given that one hears of digital fraud on a daily basis, awareness of cyber safety is a must. Samvada hopes to launch a feature on these cybercrimes in upcoming editions. RWCS is requested to organise another meeting on a weekend so that more residents can participate.
