New Friends Club Hosts a Traditional Lohri Evening Full of Joy

Lohri, one of the most cherished harvest festivals in India, is celebrated with great enthusiasm across Punjab and other northern states. This vibrant festival marks the end of winter and the arrival of longer, sunnier days. It’s a time for gratitude, as communities thank nature for a bountiful harvest and welcome the sun’s warmth, which is essential for crop growth. Central to the celebrations are bonfires, where people gather to offer sesame seeds, peanuts, and jaggery—a symbol of unity and thanksgiving.

Lohri is celebrated by Punjabi Hindus, Sikhs, Dogras, and communities in Haryana and parts of Himachal Pradesh. The Sindhi community, adding its unique cultural flair, celebrates it as “Lal Loi.” The festival is a beautiful reflection of shared traditions and regional diversity.

This year, the New Friends Club hosted its annual Lohri celebration on January 12, 2025, in a traditional and vibrant manner. The event featured ethnic decor that captured the essence of the festival, along with a variety of delicious delicacies prepared by the club. The highlight of the evening was the bonfire, around which attendees came together to sing, dance, and celebrate. The warmth of the fire and the joy of the gathering created a festive atmosphere, reinforcing the spirit of community and togetherness.

The celebration not only honoured tradition but also served as a reminder of the importance of unity and gratitude in our lives. It was a memorable evening that left everyone with a sense of happiness and belonging.
