Monsoon Driving Tip: Stay Safe on the Roads

As the monsoons approach, safe drivers know that driving during wet weather comes with dangers. Inclement weather is unpredictable, and road surfaces and traffic behavior change dramatically. To adapt, safe drivers adjust their driving style accordingly, understanding that their thoughts influence their actions behind the wheel. Before hitting the road, it’s essential to prepare your vehicle. Start by checking your tyres, ensuring a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm to maintain road grip and minimize skidding. Worn-out tyres can lead to reduced braking power and increased stopping distances.

Next, inspect your wipers, replacing them if they leave streaks on the windscreen. Clear visibility is crucial, including the rear windscreen. Older cars may have scratched windscreens, which can severely limit your vision at night, especially during rain. Ensure your lights are functioning correctly, including headlights, hazard warning lights, and brake lights. Drive with your headlights on in dip mode to increase visibility and avoid collisions.

Brake servicing is also vital, checking pads, brake shoes, hydraulic brake oil, and connections. The handbrake should be functioning properly, and rubber pads on pedals should not be worn out to prevent slipping. Finally, have your vehicle serviced before the monsoons, including cleaning the underside, applying anti-rust oil spray, and cleaning the cabin to prevent musty smells.

Remember, safe driving during monsoons requires preparation, attention to detail, and a defensive mindset. As certified trainer Sanjaya Varma emphasizes, “Drive bearing in mind the errors of others.” Stay safe on the roads!
