Menace Created by Stray Dogs, Monkeys & Cats

It is well-known all-over NCR region & rather in the whole country what kind of menace is created by simians & stray dogs and huge population of cats.

Several court judgements have been passed, time and again but the problems remain unresolved. Too many versions by animal lovers and the harassed residents.

Lives have been lost, large man power is wasted due to dog bites and unhealthy, nauseating situations are created every day in various colonies.

Quite recently, Ms. Khanna, a resident of our block, sent the following message in one of the block groups.

“Stray dogs and cats are creating quite a menace nowadays. Y’Day a dog bit my son’s friend. The child is quite scared and scarred for life. The dogs bark all night and they do not let us sleep in any case. I don’t understand why we keep protecting them. The cats in our colony keep multiplying so our houses have become their bathrooms. On a daily basis I find their faeces at our door steps.

Their dead bodies are lying somewhere or the other. It is very very distressing.”

I appraised the residents in the group that SBWS has been doing a relentless follow-up with the vet dept of MCD but the results are just pathetic. Several reminders have been sent to Dr C V Singh of Vet Dept. MCD south zone. Between 26 Aug ’22 and 29 Jan ‘23. Mr Singh had promised to deploy a monkey catcher, Tasleem in Aug. We also did the follow up with Tasleem. In spite of promises, he never turned up. For dogs, a van has been deputed couple of times. The team catches a few strays and releases them back in the same area after neutering them.

For monkeys, the issue has been raised several times in various national dailies and thru the columns of Community Samvada.

Several reminders sent to MCD authorities have elicited no response.

It is a “fait accompli”, which we have to accept and learn to live with these problems.
