Vandana Gupta (C-203) has shared on WhatsApp groups that she caught her domestic helpers red-handed while stealing from her house. She says that the mother-daughter duo, named Nandini and Renu, have stolen items worth over Rs 50,000, including cash, a watch, Airpods, etc. None of the items have been recovered so far. She even posted a picture of the two maids on the group, requesting others not to hire them as part-time maids. It is unclear if the police were involved or if the two women were let off with a warning.
When Samvada’s editor showed the picture of the two women to her maid, she was told that these maids stayed in Nithari and were seen casually walking about without a care. She was also told that the memsahib of another house identified Nandini & Renu as having worked with her a decade ago and that she fired them when she saw them pick up items and steal from drawers.
This is not an isolated case of a maid stealing from a house. According to a newspaper report, a woman who stole Rs 20 Lakhs while posing as a maid was caught by the Sector 20 Police team.
It seems that on Oct 2nd, Surishth Tiwary filed a case in the Sector 20 police station that he had hired 24-year-old Julie as an aaya to take care of his grandson. Julie was said to belong to the Chappra district of Bengal and used to stay at Vasant Kunj, Delhi, earlier. She was hired on the recommendation of a lady named Amrita Singh, who claimed to be her sister. Tiwari discovered a theft of Rs 11 lakhs from his residence on Sept. 26. On reviewing CCTV footage, they found Julie and Amrita stealing the money. The family then discovered other valuables missing from the house.
Julie was caught near the Film City Flyover Bridge, and police recovered nearly Rs 58,000/-, a bag, a purse, and an Aadhar Card from her. The police continues to be on the lookout for the co-accused, her sister.
