Role- Play Act a Big Hit with Children
by Vichitra Sharma
It was a Ramayan with a difference! The Dussehra festivities this year on 4 Oct at the Maharani Bagh Community Centre saw children enacting scenes from the Ramayan, not in a story
format or as a musical drama but were free to pick their favourite character and simply act out a scene or two of their choice. This ‘Role Play’ performance was a great hit and thoroughly enjoyed by the children.
Some came dressed as Hanuman, another one as Ravan, one as Vibhishan and the central figure Shriram with a little Sita next to him.
In all, it was a hilarious event with these characters prancing all over the stage area, running around with bows and arrows, some even continued the Act after the show, not knowing when to stop!
The other highlights of the programme included poems, quiz and the dandiya dance. An interesting aspect was that all these events were put up by the children of Maharani Bagh.
The person behind this show was a dynamic resident Jyoti Nanda. Expanding on the concept, she said to give a complete local flavour to the event, the mothers of these children had cooked all the food that was served on the day. “We wanted to provide home-cooked food to the children and others who came to watch the event. There were over 25 mothers who participated in this,” she said.
Not to let any child feel left out, especially those who didn’t have a role to play, the organisers decided to give presents to all, such as bows and arrows and chocolates.
Not one to be resting on the laurels of this programme, Jyoti Nanda has already finalised the month end programme of Halloween, when children in costumes will go around three Roads of Maharani Bagh calling out ‘trick or treat.’
