Maha Shivratri Celebration In Shiv Mandir

On 18th Feb Shiv Mandir Green Park was all decorated with a lot of fervor as this commemorates the wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Ramayan Akand Path at 9 am and aarambh bhog next morning was performed. In the afternoon 2 to 5 pm Shiv Parvati bhajans with dancing were performed by about 400 devotees who were there to enjoy the auspicious day. Prasad of kheer, tikkies, banana and tea was relished by all. At night char peher abhishek was held. It is believed that worshiping Shiv ji on Mahashivratri, bestows one with happiness and prosperity.

According to hindu calendar, the 14th day of each month is Shivratri hence there are 12 Shivratris. Most significant is Mahashivratri that comes once a year between February and March as this signifies the amalgamation of two strong forces – Shiva, the God of death and Shakti – the Goddess of power that vanquishes evil spirits. Shiva and Shanker are not the same. Former in dhyanyoga signifies the final stage of consciousness – Samadhi. Linga, the black Ellipsoidal stone permanently energized with prana was manifested on this day. Linga signifies the union of masculine and feminin (Shiva & Shakti) energies. Hence creation and destruction of the universe.

Another belief is that in order to save the universe, on this day, Shiva consumed and kept poison that came out at the time of Samudra Manthan, in his throat and as such is also known as Neelkanth.
