Living Through The Ages: Wisdom and Reflection

In the quiet lane of E block, 92 year old Mr. Prem Khullar stands as a living testament to the passage of time and transformation. A long time resident of the area, Mr. Khullar has witnessed the evolution of his neighbourhood from serene quarters to a vibrant urban hub. Known for his sharp memory and warm demeanour, he is a beloved figure in the community. He shares his reflections on life, the changing face of our colony and the enduring values that continue to anchor him amid the rapid pace of modernity. A small frame, brisk walk in the early hours now with a walking stick and always with a smile is what makes him stand out.

His early childhood: Born in pre-partition Lahore, one of the six siblings lived in a large house. His father studied MBBS but later turned to homeopathy. Mr. Khullar is witness to partition and reminisces how with a heavy heart, they had to leave Lahore. The family moved to Mathura and from there went on to complete his graduation from Delhi University and later Electrical engineering from Roorkee.Thereafter he joined Indian Railways and retired after 33.5 years.During his tenure, he stayed in various cities like Chennai, Lucknow and Ranchi.

His career and challenges: He was appointed Chief Project Manager for Railway Electrification. Under RSDO, he was responsible for electrification of Railways in the south which he successfully completed. He was transferred to Ranchi which was a challenge  as the state was reeling under thefts of overhead cables and electrical units. He took up the challenge of completing the project in one year. At one point, he was even given police protection. The project culminated in one year and now it was time to move to Delhi. Since his children were in higher classes by now, the move was more than welcome as it would give the family the requisite stability.

On moving to the Panchsheel Colony in E Block, he took up the welfare of his lane, especially the Security and repairs and maintenance of the lane and the park behind it.

Hobbies: He is a self taught homeopath and a lot of residents avail of his knowledge. He is also fond of sculpture and his house is adorned with his clay idols sculpted by him. According to him, a combination of science and art fosters mindfulness and patience

Important life lesson: He tells the youth to stay connected to the roots, embrace the traditions and keep yourself grounded in values and cultural wisdom. This will help you navigate the ever changing world.

It was indeed a pleasure talking to him professionally and personally. Thank you Khullar Uncle for the pearls of wisdom.
