As Maneesha stood watching over her terrace garden, suddenly something dropped on her feet from the sky. Startled, she stepped back. Only to find a little white balllying at her feet. Thank fully, it was still alive. She picked up the tired bird who fell asleep immediately on her palm. After some food, water, and a whole night’s rest, the little survivor was flying all over the house, happily exploring her new surroundings. The birders of Malibu identified it as “ Albino Java Sparrow”, a member of the Finch family, found in Indonesia. These poor birds are sold as exotic pets and mostly spend their lives in cages. This one had apparently escaped confinement and that was also the reason why it fell after a short flight. It had no practice flying and got tired quickly.
The advice from Birders, to let the bird remain indoors as it had little chance of survival outside had Maneesha worried. She hated the idea of caging a free bird, but couldn’t risk keeping it flying around and eventually finding an open window or door.
One of the group members reached out to Mohini, of PD-25, who has an aviary built for birds that were rescued and brought to her by people who knew of her love for them. She readily agreed to take the bird into her abode. Despite apprehensions about the reaction of other residents of the aviary, the little finch was released amongst them. Much to everyone’s relief, it was instantly welcomed into the tribe.
Thanks to some kind souls, the lucky escapee not only found a new, bigger & better home but also found a family. She will no longer have to spend the rest of her life crammed in a cage, alone, sad. But what about those who do not get as lucky?
A bird best belongs on a tree. Let it remain there.
