Lifafiya: A Thought-Provoking Theatrical Experience

On the evening of February 18, 2025, residents gathered at the Dharam Vira Community Centre (DVCC) for a special theatrical performance of Lifafiya, brought to us by Maraa, a media and arts collective. The solo performance, skillfully enacted by Anushi Aggarwal, invited the audience into an intimate space of storytelling, reflection, and intergenerational dialogue.

As the evening began, attendees enjoyed warm chai, coffee, and refreshments, fostering a sense of fellowship before the play commenced. When the lights dimmed, Lifafiya unfolded as a deeply reflective and moving portrayal of the silences that exist between generations of women. Through real and imagined narratives, the performance explored themes of tradition, suppressed desires, and the unseen forms of violence embedded within family structures.

Anushi Aggarwal’s powerful stage presence captivated the audience, bringing to life the emotions and struggles of women across different generations. The play shed light on the complexities of familial relationships, the weight of societal expectations, and the courage required to break free from unspoken constraints. While the older members of the audience resonated deeply with the themes, it was evident that the younger generation of Anand Lok found some situations unfamiliar—perhaps a testament to the evolving social landscape and shifting gender roles over time.

Following the performance, an engaging discussion allowed attendees to share their reflections. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to witness such a poignant piece of art, which not only highlighted the struggles of women but also encouraged introspection and dialogue. It was heartening to see conversations bridging generational gaps, fostering greater understanding and empathy.

Team ARA deserves immense appreciation for organizing this meaningful event, creating a space where art, conversation, and community could come together. Lifafiya was more than just a performance—it was an experience that left a lasting impact, urging us all to reflect on the narratives that shape our lives.
