After all ‘cinema’ is a cultural expression!

We all have been seeing Hindi Films for so many years. There are some that we love while others we hate. We have favourite heroes and heroines and some scenes and dialogues from these movies have become engraved on our collective memories.

Some of these gems are: Dost fail ho jaye to dukh hota hai, lekin dost first aa jaye to zyada dukh hota hai – 3 Idiots. Agar shakal dekh ke ladkiyan shadi karti toh Hindustan mein aadhey ladke kawarey hote – Bareily ki Barfi. Pyaar na hua tumharaka exam ho gays – dus saal se clear hi nahi ho raha hai – Rannjhanaa. Desh ki unnati ki pehchan agar kisi cheez se hoti hai – who hai gutter – Jane Bhi do Yaro. Aadhey idhar jayo, aadhey udhar jayo aur baki humarey saath aayo – Sholay. Meri dictionary mein impossible ka shabd hi nahi hai. Kahan se kharidi yeh bakwaas dictionary – Chennai Express. Arey Baba wrong number hai to uthata kyun hai? – Hera Pheri Jinke ghar sheeshey ke hoten hain, wof basement mein kapdey badlatey hain – Golmal 3.

There are some Hindi Film names which by itself provide the essence of life and give us food for thought. I could think of the following: Jane Bhi Do Yaro: Wow! Is it not saying to move ahead, to leave aside, let-go of negativity, jealousy, enmity? Zindagi Na Milegi Dubara & Kal Ho Na Ho: We live only once. We have two lives and the second one begins when we think we have only one. In English we go ga-ga about YOLO (You Only Live Once). This precisely is telling us to live the moment. Many of us have Carpe Diem in our DP’s. This is the Hindi version of it. Isn’t it? Dil Se: Be genuine, be authentic. Listen to your heart. Have no regrets. Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum: Life is not a bed of roses and it has good and bad chapters. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander: Tells you about the importance of winning. Chak-De India & Jai Ho: Undoubtedly the most inspirational patriotic chants ever. Junoon: Be passionate. Rang De Basanti: Just 3 words but enough to instill in us a deep and emotional connect with our Motherland. Bhaag Milka Bhaag: This is our version of Forest Grump and makes our chests swell in pride for the determination, hard work and dedication of a sport legend. Jab Tak Hai Jaan: Again beckons the romanticism is us and our commitment to our loved ones. Tarey Zameen Par: It raises our consciousness for the differently abled.

Long Live Indian Cinema!
After all ‘cinema’ is a cultural expression, it is a cultural transaction between the filmmaker and the audience. Let the magic of ‘films’ continue to enchant us.
