Let’s Discuss… Books!

Hey ‘Samwaadians’,
This is the first byte of an interactive series which is intended to cast a reading spell on you all! An interesting book shall be chosen, a bit about the book revealed, which shall then be followed by a teaser!

In case, you wish to discuss a book from your favourite list, please write to us at +91 98119 26565. The response to the teaser must also reach at the same address latest by 1 September 2023.

The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents
Samarth Girotra (T-25/204)

I must confess that even my best efforts will be insufficient to describe this amazing book? This book was written by one of the best writers I have read so far, Terry Pratchett.

Just like his other books, this one does not fail to delight as the story progresses. It is a subset on the Discworld series. The story’s setting is a disc-shaped world that is supported by four huge white elephants, who, in turn, are supported by a giant turtle, the great A’tuin, flying through space to an unknown destination!

The novel has hilarious footnotes and jokes that spin in and out of the story like an elaborate spider web of laughs. Imagine what would happen if some rodents, not mice, lived on a dump beside a wizard university where food and failed magical potions were disposed of?

Maybe they realise one good day that they have CHANGED! They can now think like the humans do and are as clever as them! Not only that, but they can also even talk like them, and most importantly, have realised that they are SMART!

Maybe they start by giving themselves names from around the dump they live on such as ‘Dangerous Beans’ and ‘Peaches’! Perhaps they would partner with a similarly CHANGED talking cat who dreams of money (as most cats do!) and a stupid-looking kid.

Perhaps, they would repeat the Pied Piper trick on the unsuspecting townsfolk. May be, one fine day, they wander into a town named ‘Bad Blitz’ where an evil mind-bending foe lurks, with the power to control both rats and humans.

Ach! I have revealed too much already! Even though this is a fictional book, it contains an astonishing amount of research, borrowing ideas from fairy tales and mythology. Altogether, a great read and not to be missed.

Teaser:

  1. Read this engrossing novel to find out more about the astonishing phenomenon referred to in my write-up.
  2. Compare this book with any other book from the Discworld series.
  3. What could happen if the CHANGED rodents were to arrive in your city and replayed the Pied Piper trick?
  4. What parts of the novel seem ‘reality’ and ‘fictitious’ to you?
