After years of complaining about garbage being dumped indiscriminately in the market area, parks and roads, we have come to the point of actually doing something about it.
With the advent of the new SCRWA, a Waste Management Committee was formed on 2nd November 2022, by a group of Residents, who decided to take the muck head on. In actual fact, Waste is not Waste until we waste it. Wet waste can be composted and the Dry waste can be recycled. The problem lay in the lack of awareness of how Waste can actually be a resource if it is segregated into Wet and Dry Waste properly.
We are working closely with representatives from Ecogreen, the MCG empanelled Concessionaire for collection of Household Waste, as well as with Saahas, an NGO working with MCG on “Alag Karo’, the Waste Segregation Project.
There have been many teething problems and we invited feedback from the Residents so that these could be ironed out.
At present the Block-wise level of Waste Segregation is as below:
Block A -80%
Block C -70%
Block D -80%
Block E -80%
Block F -65%
Block G -50%
Block M -60%
Block N- 40-50%
Block O -40-50%
Currently Saahas is working in Blocks M, N, O and B, in the Door-to – Door Awareness Program on Waste Segregation.
In early November 2022, only 10-15% Householders were segregating the Waste generated at their homes. The increasing trend of segregation of waste at source, is encouraging. It was decided at the meeting held on 20th Dec 2022, that in order to acknowledge and commemorate the efforts of the Residents who are segregating their waste, Ecogreen will gift a bag of compost to them. This compost is made at its Composting Unit at Sector 44.
Our Aim is to make South City1 a Zero – Waste Colony which in turn will reduce pollution and thereby impact Climate Change. So in effect, by the simple act of segregating your own household Waste, you can do your bit to impact Global warming.
