On October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, the cricket academy at a reputed school in Sector 50, Noida, witnessed a special event. The coach, Sachin Adhikari organized a motivational meeting with former West Indies cricketer Mr. Lendl Mark Platter Simmons.
Despite the scorching heat, students, sports teachers, and parents eagerly awaited Simmons’ arrival. His gracious entrance, sans bodyguards or fanfare, set the tone for an intimate interaction. Simmons observed the children’s practice session and granted an interview to a journalist. The backdrop of laughing children and cricket balls hitting bats added a charming touch to the scene.
Twice, a stray ball rolled towards him, and he effortlessly returned it to the bowler, showcasing his reflexes and sportsmanship. After the interview, Simmons happily met the children, patiently signing autographs on their jerseys or bats, taking selfies, and shaking hands with them. His patience and kindness left everyone in awe. When offered a drink, he chose water, teaching the kids a valuable lesson in humility and health. The children had hoped to learn his batting secrets or bowling techniques, but instead, they gained something far more valuable: a lesson in character. The encounter with the West Indies cricket legend will forever be etched in their memories. His humility and kindness inspired the young cricketers to emulate his behaviour.
