Lack of civic sensitivity among citizens is causing a huge damage to the society. People demonstrate extreme selfish behavior without being concerned about the impact of that behavior on others in the community. Almost every day one notices a message in the local whatsapp group with a photograph ‘please remove this car in front of our gate; we have to take our car out’. Someone, a visitor to neighbor or family member of neighbor has left the car in front of house without considering inconvenience that it will cause to residents of that house. In most cases, one has to struggle to find out who the owner of the car is and how to contact him.
Yesterday morning on my morning walk, I could not enter the park of our block from its main gate as it was totally blocked partly by equipment belonging to the builder of the house opposite the gate and major portion of the gate was blocked by a car parked by a resident leaving no space for anyone to enter the park. I had to enter the park using the side gate. No one (builder, resident who parked the car and RWA guards) has any concern for the residents who have to enter the park.
Today morning was still more disturbing when on the morning walk I found one of the entry gates to the block totally blocked by a car parked by the resident, blocking entry/ exit of all vehicles. I watched cars carrying school children taking a u turn to take longer route and use other gate to reach the bus stand of the child. I do not know how many residents had to take detour and how many children missed the bus. It is yet another example of selfish act of an uncivilized resident who decided to park his car in front of the entry/ exit gate at night blocking it from us by residents to drop their children to school bus stop or go out of the block early morning.
Such apathy by citizens is causing a lack of harmony, confrontation among neighbors and unnecessary conflicts. Citizens need to be sensitive to the requirements of other fellow citizens and avoid causing inconvenience to others, avoid parking in front of someone’s gate or entry / exit gates to facilitate free movement especially in case of any emergency. In case people have no option they should leave their mobile number on windscreen for people to contact you. Such behavior will definitely reduce stress and acrimony in the society.
