A heroic warrior with a noble heart
Sky was indeed the limit for Wg Cdr Swadesh Chandra Sahni when he would spread his wings and soar for more as a Fighter Pilot during his illustrious career with the In-dian Air Force. After shifting to India with his family during the partition, Wg Cdr Sahni was commissioned into the forces in 1955 at the prime of his youth and he valiantly served the country for over three decades until hanging up his boots with the Defence Services in the mid-80s.
Wg Cdr Sahni has always been fond of Aerobatics and fondly speaks about the initial kick that he would get on hitting his targets as a Fighter Pilot. He reminisces having actively fought in two wars against Pakistan – in 1965 and 1971. It is the memories of these wars that he cherishes to date and recalls an adventurous moment when he had to make an emergency landing at an unscheduled location while participating in one of these wars when his plane ran out of fuel. His love for flying also made him don the mantle of training pilots as an Instructor during his stint with the Indian Air Force.
He attributes his disciplined lifestyle to the rigors of the Defence life that he underwent. In fact even now as an octogenarian, he does most of his work himself which includes washing his own clothes too. In spite of having spent a lifetime in the Forces, Wg Cdr Sahni has remained a teetotaler and non-smoker. His guiding philosophy in life has been Simple Living and High Thinking
He has also passed on these values to his three children who have not only received a good education but are also very well settled in their respective domains. His elder daughter stays in GK-2 too while his younger daughter is an ex-Investment Banker settled in the US. His son manages an export business in Noida. A resident of S Block in GK-2, Wg Cdr Sahni is leading a peaceful retired life and dotes on his grandchildren. He continues to follow his passion for singing with fluency and a highly stable voice.
