Know Thy Neighbour – Vivek Agarwal

Vivek Agarwal, an E Block GK-2 resident is truly a man who defines success on his own terms and achieves it by his own rules. His life has indeed been a roller coaster ride that has given him multi-faceted experiences which have gone a long way in shaping up his persona. After completing his initial education from the renowned Delhi Public School, RK Puram and Shriram College of Commerce, Vivek pursued the prestigious course of Chartered Accountancy acting more on his parental guidance than his own interest in the program.

Nonetheless, he completed the course with a rank in the All India Merit List in 1991, but his passion for computer software coding had different plans in store for him. And, this paved the way for a highly versatile and fulfilling career for Vivek that he finds satisfying even today. In the era that Information Technology was still an enigma, Vivek set up an IT Company with his friend in 1992. The Japanese investment in the company provided him an exposure to the advancements in the field of IT in Japan at that time which further whetted his appetite to learn more about it.

Six years later, Vivek moved to the US and worked with a Company there to gain experience in the domain of internet based selling and e-commerce. This held him in good stead to introduce the concept of e-tendering to the Government upon his return to India in 2000. His pitch for this concept, about which very little was known at that time, was initially met with skepticism. He was however fortunate to have found acceptance to this idea by the AP Government in 2002. After that, there was no looking back for him as one by one, the various State Governments started moving towards the concept of e-tendering that has now become a mainstay in the functioning of all Government Departments.

The total volume of e-tendering business done on the software developed by his Company, CI India, touched about Rs.1 Lakh Crores per annum by the year 2006. Not just this, other countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Oman and Kenya were also among the early movers to adapt to this technology. The widely successful implementation of this innovation earned Vivek two National Awards from the Government of India for ushering in transformation and a UN Public Service Award in Vienna.

In 2011, after selling his stake in his company, Vivek decided to shift gears and moved into the Telecom industry where again he set up his own venture, Vista Group of Companies where he provided communication channels to Mission Critical operations of Army, Paramilitary forces, Railway etc. His company also carried out prestigious contracts of establishing communication lines in Katra-Srinagar tunnels and in the Delhi-Mumbai freight corridors. Having acquired a market leadership position in this domain, Vivek decided to make his business holistic by covering the aspects of Cyber Security as well. His recent foray into Real Estate about a year back complements his business endeavors well. Among his current notable projects is the development of a Shopping Mall in the upcoming World Trade Centre in Netaji Nagar.

While his keen eye for developing out of the box business concepts has played a significant role in his life, Vivek is also spiritually inclined. He involves himself in various activities of the GK-2 temple. His involvement in the community development led him to install security system along with his co-residents in Sehgal Marker-2 area of E Block last December. His wife supports him actively in his businesses. Their daughter lives in London and their son is pursuing Engineering from UIUC, USA. We, at Samvada, wish Mr Vivek Agarwal all the very best for all times.
