Know Thy Neighbour – Shaan Mohan

As they say, a good lawyer goes into the business of becoming lawyer not for money but for the thrill of problem solving. Lawyer Shaan Mohan, our featured resident for this column this month and an S Block resident, is a perfect embodiment of this adage. Looking back at his career in law spanning over a decade, Shaan fondly reminisces some of the offbeat cases that took him outside his comfort zone and tested his legal and analytical skills to the hilt thereby strengthening his professional acumen even further.

He names NGT ban on Diesel cars, GK-2 Water Table issue and the infamous Tandoor Murder incident as a few such cases falling into this league that he has worked on.  After graduating in Law from the renowned Amity Law School (Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University) in 2013, Shaan started out as an Intern in the Boutique Law Firm, Nayyar & Agarwal. His area of specialization is litigation focusing on areas like Commercial Disputes and family disputes.

Equipped with experience in these domains, Shaan joined MG Law Affiliates as Partner and has gained from the professional experience of Mr. Mukul Gupta, Sr. Advocate and Ms. Mukta Gupta former Delhi High Court Judge who founded this firm. Apart from his other accomplishments, he is also a Senior Panel Counsel for the GNCTD and Legal Advisor to Automobile Association of Upper India. Although he endorses the high quality of education that is imparted in our Law Schools, Shaan firmly advocates for inclusion of Entrepreneurship in the legal curriculum of these schools. In his view, this would arm our young lawyers with the skills to expand their occupation since business development skills are equally, if not more, important than the other skills required in the legal profession.

He also believes that the trait to remain silent when the situation demands is a virtue that every good lawyer should possess. In that sense, it is a misconception that people who are argumentative necessarily become able lawyers. Shaan also scoffs at the practice followed by a section of the legal fraternity to needlessly prolong cases as, in his view, justice delayed is justice denied. Shaan recognizes his family as the pillar of strength behind all his endeavors. His parents were accomplished journalists with his late father having served as the Editor of The Tribune. Shaan is an avid photographer too – a talent that he has inherited from his mother. His elder brother works in the field of Education. We wish Shaan Mohan all the very best for all times to come.
