In consonance with ‘The Kittens Club’ resolution to let no winter month pass uncelebrated, a free event was planned for 29 January. However, after casting a damper on the Republic Day Flypast, Indra Dev decided to bless us, too, on that day, and a disappointed Executive decided to take the proverbial rain check.
Nothing loth, the Kittens played a hilarious game of Matki Phod. As each Kitten, blindfolded, tried to reach the Matki, it became obvious that our ladies were not inclined to follow the straight and narrow path. A distinct rightist bent was quite apparent, as Kitten after Kitten veered east of the trajectory. One moment of panic for Harsh, our photographer and DJ, as my neighbour, Promila Dogra made a beeline for him. It was a tossup whether he would get clobbered or his music player. Another, for me, as a small dip in the park sent me for a full-toss. Fortunately, no bones broken. Ira Sharma scampered around, retrieving the lathi, and guiding her favourites. Cleverly, Ragini Jain counted the steps to the matki. But once blindfolded, all calculations took to the wind, 15 steps became 20, and directional control disappeared as she veered west ward. She would have exited the park if she had not been stopped! Neeta Prem almost clobbered the dog that had strayed into the venue. It would have been poetic justice for all the stray dog bites reported regularly. Guess who succeeded? Yup. Yours very truly. I took a cue from Ragini, and counted the steps, but making sure that my paces were measured. Directional control was achieved by straddling instead of walking straight. Of course, it is as much a matter of luck. It was a good day for me; as I went on to win sheet prize and a house at Tambola.
A short game of musical chairs won by Madhu Malhautra and the ladies settled down to their favourite, Tambola. 2 games later, and to our surprise, the Chaat waala called out that it was 5 and time for a mouth watering round of gol-guppa, paapri chaat, dahi paapri, washed down with cold drinks, and, followed by delicious gulab jamun. Tank full and it was selfies time for the gang. Gupshup and thank yous over, the Kittens returned home. Content and happy.
