Kitchen Waste in Suncity is Transformed into Electricity

As Suncity residents, we have a practice of segregating our waste into two bins, one for wet kitchen waste and another for dry waste.

While we segregate this waste, we might not have an inkling of what this small effort on our part could turn out into. All this kitchen waste picked up from all homes in Suncity contributes to 650 kg of waste everyday!

This waste is used to prepare the slurry required to produce Biogas in a model plant set up in the tank area near the Suncity Arcade, all this is done in collaboration with an NGO called SAAHAS.

This making of the slurry ensures quick decomposition of the kitchen waste and is the raw material required to produce the biogas. Kusum Sharma, Chairperson of Suncity RWA, stated that 600 kg of biogas was made every day out of the kitchen waste collected from the township. The slurry is taken to the biogas plant ECO GRAM near Paras Hospital and is converted into biogas that further is converted into electricity that is used to run the plant.

Just a simple act of segregation of waste by all the Suncity residents and the teamwork of the SRWA with SAAHAS and ECOGRAM ensures that we as a community are reducing a huge amount of waste into electricity and saving the environment by not allowing this waste to pile up in the landfill and contribute to greenhouse gas like methane.

This innovative approach in the Suncity Township has been lauded by the jury of the campaign #WEMAKEGURGAON TrashFree and Suncity Township was one of the winners in the outstanding composting category.
