In Her Own Words
I grew up in an Ayurveda family in Patna. After the whole day of hard work my father used to go to his farm called Krishi Vatika. Krishi Vatika means agriculture and garden.
In Bihar horticulture annual show, we used to get more than 36 prizes. Prizes for cut flowers and vegetables. One of our cabbages was 9 kilo 150 grams!
Being the eldest child of the family, my father used to write my name for the competition.
And those days radio interview hota tha. Mera interview broadcast hota tha. They used to ask about my hobbies and interest in the garden. We used to go there with our father every evening.
After my marriage I was growing my own vegetables wherever my husband was posted.
When I came to Noida after retirement, I was using wooden mango boxes but they would not last. Then I got cement planters made.
Then I got some terracotta round ones and then plastic planters and then finally iron ones.
But the iron ones need to be painted every year from inside and outside otherwise they will rust very easily.
I am growing my spinach, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower cabbage, sarso ka saag, methi, onion, garlic and brinjals. Sometimes my cauliflowers are 2 kg 100 grams each!
In the summer, lauki and torai are there. I have bought a freezer to store my extra crop. Spinach and tomatoes I make into cubes and use them when needed.
