Sun City

Kids Line Up Collecting Fallen Jamun

Besides many other benefits that Suncity offers its residents, it also has a rich heritage of Jamun trees spread up in the lanes of Suncity. It is unknown who planted them and when, but they continue giving us fruit.

Often on my visit to the Suncity market I remember spotting kids lined up under the big Jamun tree across the market and also inside the market complex. Collecting the fallen Jamun fruit with enthusiasm.

These trees during the season, which is coming up in July, are loaded with purple berries, a beautiful sight for an onlooker. It also provides a great activity for the children and workers of the township to enjoy fresh fruit from the tree. I have witnessed some of the residents happily collecting them in a basket to carry home. Our Suncity Roads also get carpeted with tiny berries which go to waste and cannot be picked up. What a waste of Nature’s gift.

Jamun is a very nutritious summer fruit that has a wide range of health benefits. The fruit is commonly called the Indian blackberry, Java plum, or black plum. There are two types of Jamuns – one variety is the white flesh Jamun, while the other is the purple flesh variety. The white flesh jamun comes with a higher amount of pectin, and the purple flesh variety has a lower amount.  Jamun has many health benefits that work wonders for the body. It Increases Hemoglobin, Keeps the Heart Healthy, Treats Digestive Problems, Fights Respiratory Problems, Protects Against Infections and is good for gums and teeth.

Jamun is a great gift for people suffering from diabetes. The ingredients like Jamboline and Jambosine present in the seeds slow down glucose levels in the blood and increase the release of insulin. Besides it helps in cases like stomach pain, arthritis, flatulence, asthma, dysentery, and stomach spasm. If you’re looking to lose weight. It can be used in salads and smoothies also.

Brace yourselves for the upcoming Jamun season!
