Looks are our best friends for life – a friend who stays with us no matter what.
Introducing books to kids at an early age helps them build their vocabulary, enhances their understanding and of course adds to their intellect.
A new initiative has been taken by a few esidents of Mahagun Mezzaria. It’s a pilot project and was taken up three months back but the response has been encouraging. Kids Books Pot luck or kids personal library. – is what we call it. Five kids aged 6to 10 come together and carry two books each. Each of them then displays their books to be chosen by the rest of the kids. Once chosen, they are given two weeks to read and when they meet again, they all share their experience of reading the chosen book. They are asked to speak about one thing that they absolutely loved about the book and one thing that can be improved to make it better. In each session one of them reviews a book. And another one takes up the responsibility of keeping a record . The responsibilities are taken up in turns and each child gets a chance.
While the main objective of this pilot project is to promote reading habit in children, there are other positive things too. The children get to read a variety of books without having to buy them. This also means that they are reusing the books and saving paper. It automatically inculcates an awareness for the environment. The meeting sessions help build camaraderie amongst them. Also, they feel important and develop a sense of responsibility. The children have had five sessions before they departed for the summer break. They are back and are now looking forward to their sessions. Parents are also happy since their children are reading regularly.
