Married women observe Karwa Chauth fast to pray for the long lives of their husbands and for prosperity. They mark the festival with the belief that it emulates Goddess Parvati, who observed a fast to obtain Lord Shiva as her husband. The fast also brings good luck and prosperity to the family.
The karwa Chauth puja for the women residents, on fast that day, was organised by the RWA Sector 92 in the Community Centre. The vibrant colors red, orange, deep pink were everywhere to see, in the beautiful dresses of the women who were looking their best in the traditional style accessories of bangles and ornaments, and mehndi designs adorning the hands. The ladies had dressed up for their husbands and fasting for his long life and health. They were all glowing with smiles and happy faces.
The puja was performed by the Panditji of the mandir in the sector. Everyone listened to the katha with great interest and did thali rounds sitting in a circle.
After the puja some younger ladies were seen touching the feet of the elder ones, who showered them with blessings of a long married life. The ladies exchanged greetings and had appreciative glances for each other when all had taken care to look their ‘married’ best.
With a happy mood they proceeded to their homes, to spend some time before the moon appeared when they performed puja with their husbands and family members.
It is from this day onwards that preparations are done for Diwali festivities.
