On 8 Jul 1999, despite being shot 15 times, (then) Grenadier Yadav led the assault to capture the crucial 16,700 feet high Tiger Hill, a pivotal moment in the conflict. For his major role in recapturing Tiger Hill, bravery, extraordinary courage and resilience in the face of adversity, Grenadier Yadav, at 19 years, was the youngest recipient to be awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest military honour of Republic of India.
