Blocked pedestrian pathways in M Block market
Health experts advise us to get onto our feet.
-Environmentalists ask us to walk instead of drive.
-My pedometer urges me to get in those daily steps.
I try to adhere to the above as much as I can and walk to our M Block GK2 market since it is so close by. Taking the car makes no sense at all. But tell me, where is the space to walk? Once there you realize that there is no place for pedestrians.
The market trader’s association seems to have been overruled by the parking mafia. One sees cars parked in double rows; 2-wheelers lined up on the road in front of the shops obstructing the entrances to the shops. Right outside the area of the State Bank of India, there is a pan stall, where crowds gather and people are seen smoking away and forcing others to spoil their lungs too. Adding to this encroachment are motorbikes that are parked in these corridors in front of the shops, corridors that are meant only for the visitors/shoppers to walk through comfortably.
My heart goes out to the senior citizens/differently abled when I see their precarious situation trying to get in or out of a bank or shop in the market.
My request here is to The Traders Association, the Traffic Police of Delhi and the RWA to get this mess sorted at the earliest. Let’s learn from the developed countries how to respect pedestrians and their right to way. We need to encourage people to walk more, enjoy it rather than dread it.
