I was at my bank for some work. It was early banking hours and very few customers were present. There was a young man ahead of me at the concerned desk. The bank officer
had his eyes glued to the computer screen. He suddenly turned his gaze towards this young man and said “Bees hazaar toh aap le chuke hain.” The young man immediately said in a surprised and shocking tone – “Maine koi paise nahin nikaale. Main toh paise jamaa karaane ke baad aaj pehli baar aaya hoon!” There was surprise, shock, astonishment, all rolled into one, expression on his face. His face was moving from left to right as if seeking support from people around. He kept mumbling “Yeh kaise ho sakta hai. Meri toh saari kamai chali gayi.”
A few moments later the bank officer once again lifted his face from the computer screen and told in an indifferent tone, “Tumhare woh Bees hazaar fixed deposit khate mein padhe hain.”
The young man was not convinced and said, “Mere woh Bees hazaar mere khate (passbook) mein kyon nahin hain?”
Watching the indifferent, couldn’t- care attitude of the bank officer, I explained to this young man that his money in FD was safe and he need not worry.
The young man deposited another ten thousand in his account and left.
A good ten minutes later, whilst I was still dealing with the bank officer, the young man was back with a frown and worried look.
He asked the bank officer to return his twenty thousand and put it in his khata.
Seeing that the bank officer was in no mood to indulge in understandings of this young man, I once again explained to this young man, how he must have opted for an account with auto fixed deposit provision at the time of opening his account. Also he should not have any apprehension of his amount going missing. Another gentleman too joined in to explain this to this young man.
The young man left. So did I.
In retrospect I think it was that one first reply of this bank officer, “Tum apne Bees hazaar nikaal chuke ho,” without checking full details, since the amount had simply been transferred into a fixed deposit account , which made this young man lose trust.
I am quite sure this young man would have returned the next day or after few days to cancel the FD or change his account operating instructions as I clearly saw that he was not convinced with what the bank officer said. For him this twenty thousand should show in his khata.
At the end it all boils down to TRUST.
