It May Happen In May

Few days back we all bid adieu to the month of May and oh boy what a month it was. Usually in the month of May when someone asks us “how’s the weather in your city?” our reply would be – “oh nothing out of the ordinary, just intense scorching heat and dry winds.” But this time around we were left scratching our heads to find the right answer to this question. Because this time the weather in May was as if the weather Gods were trying to show us a trailer of the annual weather phenomenon in just a single month.

The month of May started with rising temperatures and the residents were just bracing themselves for a scorching month. Air conditioners and desert coolers were being bought; green shades and sheets were being installed on houses and so on. But the residents were in for a surprise as just after 2-3 days of high temperatures the rain Gods showered their blessings on us bringing the temperature down. Then again the temperature would slowly and shyly start rising only to be sent back down by sudden winds and rains. There were times when the sun God managed to gather up all the courage and show all his might and sent the residents taking shelter in their homes as temperatures reached 44 degree Celsius. But just as we thought that finally the scorching heat that we all expected has finally come to stay we were again sent looking for the shelters of our homes but this time due to the heavy thunderstorms and strong winds that were enough to blow anything that came in their way. It seemed that the whole weather machinery had gone berserk. One moment there was bright sunshine out your window and the next moment there were hailstones clattering against the same window. Even the weather apps on our phones seemed to be high on something; the app would show the current weather as sunny whereas it would be raining outside and vice versa. The newspapers also had a tough time planning their news headlines. One day the headlines would read “city swelters under heat wave” and the next day it would read “Thunderstorms and strong winds lash over the city”.

While we may be having fun with this changing weather and intermittent rains, this unpredictable weather is a bad sign. While we were laughing and giggling in the rain our farmers were crying because the heavy rains were destroying their summer crops. Strong winds caused damages in the sector and city. People were falling sick by exposure to sudden extremes and the most concerning factor is that these unpredictable, sudden and extreme weather changes are all a part of what we call global warming; the horrors of which we all understand. Let us do our bit for the environment or else these unpredictable weather changes will prove to be catastrophic.
