Sector 92 & 93B

Is Human Life Less Important Than That of Dogs?

A question (human vs. dogs) that has cropped up, from time to time, not only in our colonies but cities all across India; and comes up with intensity, periodically, in the sector itself. It took a decade for Sectors 92 and 93 to come up as peaceful residential colonies. During construction time community dogs that already had lived here were friends to the newly moved families, who fed them and were comfortable to have the streets guarded by the dogs.

Over the years incidents happened when the street dogs bit the vendors, the unknown people and also the sector kids and elders. This sparked actions and reactions among the residents.

Recently, this is a strongly discussed issue in Sector 92. A simmering situation, since a long time, it took an ugly turn few weeks back. There are about 70 stray dogs in the sector, out of which a few are ferocious and aggressive. A few dog lovers have done good work with respect to get the dogs sterilized and vaccinated. Notwithstanding this, the problem persisted in the case of few aggressive dogs.

The aggressive dogs were pursued to be treated but for some reason the work was hampered. A very recent biting case has also flared things up in the sector. Due to such incidents the common residents have started to raise their voice loud – some are the affected ones, bitten earlier.

Talking to the RWA on this issue, we are told, that in such cases law is more in favour for the stray animals. The RWA is trying its best to reduce Human–Animal conflict, treading cautiously between ABC rules, Animal Welfare Board guidelines, Noida Dog Policy and safety of residents. It has formulated an Animal Welfare Committee consisting of RWA members, dog activists and other residents. They have been tasked with formulations of SOPs, guidelines on treatment of aggressive dogs, etc. Steps are also being taken to prevent further addition of the stray dog population. The work is still at a very nascent stage, but RWA is confident of taking it forward to increase the safety of the residents.
