As the entire Def col residents have been facing various security issues due to the non-availability of security personnel during the day, we at Samvada (Ajay Kumar) took the initiative to interact with the new SHO Sanjay Sharma to get insights. The following are the details of his future plans for the residents of Defence colony:
Ajay Kumar: Tell us about yourself so that our residents would know about your previous experience:
SHO: I belong to the Delhi NCR city of Ghaziabad and have sufficient knowledge of all the areas of Delhi. I have been the SHO of Rohini and Hauz Khas for many years and have also worked for five years in the traffic department in Delhi. I am sure that with my vast experience in policing and administration, I would be able to support the residents of Defence colony to the best of my capabilities.
Ajay Kumar: What are the real security issues in Defence colony?
SHO: I have gone through various files and also discussed with my team to know more about the current issues related to the security of the residents and Defence colony. These are some of the concerns of the residents –
• The Colony is open from all the sides in the daytime and is quite vulnerable to the crimes of all types including thefts, car-lifting and chain snatching. The visitors to the colony are in thousands every day due to commercialization, couriers, cabs, parks etc.
• The police have limited beat constables who can provide security but not for 24 hours to check each and every visitor.
• There are very few CCTV cameras functioning in the colony. There are many dark spots which may create more crimes if not resolved on priority.
• The residents are not getting their servants verified and keep changing their maids, drivers, cooks etc. without informing the police.
• There are many illegal vendors moving in the colony who are generally involved in crime as most of the main doors are open throughout the day.
Ajay Kumar: How will you resolve these issues?
SHO: I have already tasked my team to give more priority to Defence colony as the number of senior citizens who are staying alone are adding with each passing month and are quite vulnerable to all kinds of crime. We will be installing more CCTV cameras to monitor the movement of people in the colony. Our beat constables will make more rounds in the daytime to nab any suspected persons to control crimes. We have started conducting more servant verification camps all over the colony and our station will be doing it for 24/7 if and when visited by any resident.
Ajay Kumar: What are the new initiatives you are taking up?
SHO: We are also using latest techniques and gadgets to collect data from mobiles to nab the culprits. Our team is getting trained with the best in the business to nab any criminal before they commit any crime. We also have our team members in plain clothes to keep eye on any suspect with in no time. We have been successful in detaining many suspects in the last few months by using our latest training.
We have collected details of seniors staying alone and are in regular touch with them to keep them safe at all times. We are also giving training to private security guards to add more eyes around the residents.
Ajay Kumar: What is the support you need from Defence col residents in keeping them secure?
SHO: As police team also has limitations to keep the colony secured at all times, we request the respected residents to follow some basic tips as follows:
• Install your private CCTV at all the entrances and do not open the door to strangers. Get your domestic helps verified as and when you employ them. Avoid ordering from online mode unless it’s really important for your family.
• Keep your front gates locked and have one alarm which may be used in case of emergency to alert your immediate neighbors.
• Avoid sharing your personal information on money, holidays etc. as it may be misused by the criminals. Boycott the local vendors who may enter your house on any pretext.
• Colony must be gated and manned to keep the residents safe. It may cost you some money but looking at long- term benefits, it’s going to be important for you and your family.
Lastly, we at Samvada are thankful to our new SHO for taking up these much-needed initiatives for the security of the residents of Defence colony in the best possible manner. We wish him all the best for his new assignment and looking forward for his prompt support in future.
