Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. In Hindu mythology, Shiva, the first yogi (Adi Yogi), is said to have begun imparting the knowledge of yoga to the rest of mankind on this day, and became the first guru (Adi Guru). Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity. Among the Yogasanas, there are 84 basic asanas through which one can elevate one’s consciousness.
Our beloved Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in his UN address in 2014 had suggested an annual day of Yoga on June 21st as it’s the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world. Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga. The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.
International Yoga Day was also celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm by Residents of Sector 92. Both young and old, male and female participated with equal vigour. From early morning our central park was humming with presence of the residents.
The function was organized under the banner of Sanskriti Sewa Samiti with able support from Team RWA Sector 92. Dushyant Kohli, A P Dubey and Arun Shukla were the main spearheads from the Samiti and Manish Kumar, Sonya Sethi and myself represented the Team RWA at the event.
The function started with some stretching exercises and after that asanas were performed. Surendra Sharma and A K Bhardwaj were kind enough to lead the participants in performing the different asanas. Some of the main asanas performed included, Surya Namaskar, Sidhhasana, Gomukhasana, padhmasana, Dhanurasana, Navasana, Paschimottanasana, Shavasana etc. We also performed Pranayam such as Anulom Vilom and Kapalbhati.
Water and lassi was also made available for the participants at the venue. Everyone came out feeling jubilant and refreshed.
All in all it was a wonderful and memorable morning of 21 June.
