The 13th of February is National women’s day, a day of annual celebration in India. This day in 1879 saw the birth of Sarojini Naidu, an eminent poet, statesman and revolutionary in India. Naidu was an active independence movement leader and known for her literary works particularly for poems with themes like patriotism, romanticism and lyrics for which she was called nightingale of India by Mahatma Gandhi. Naidu always stood for the truth, for the empowerment of women in India. Hence her birth anniversary was chosen to commemorate Indian women and their contributions to the nation in every sphere of life without regard to divisions whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economics or political. Today we honour women who inspire and challenge us and make the world a better place. Let’s continue to break down barriers and build a bright future for women everywhere.
