International Women’s Day Award for Shikha Khare

Resident of Grand Omaxe, Guru Shikha Khare (Florence C tower), is a luminary in the realm of Kathak with more than 40 years experience, hailing from the illustrious Lucknow gharana. Coming from a family with close connections to classical arts, her journey started at a tender age of 6 at the Kathak Kendra in Lucknow. Under the tutelage of eminent master Guru Birju Maharaj she imbibed the essence of Kathak. Later, she transitioned to Shri Ram Bhartia Kala Kendra in Delhi, where she not only refined her art but also took on the role of an instructor following the gurukul concept, shaping the next generation of dancers. It’s noteworthy that her contributions at the Kendra were recognized with a senior fellowship award, as recognition for her expertise and commitment.

Khare’s academic pursuits run parallel to her artistic endeavors, as she pursued a diverse range of studies to complement her passion for dance. Graduating in Psychology, English, and Economics from Mahila College, Lucknow University, laid the foundation for her holistic understanding of human expression and behavior. Subsequently, she pursued a Master’s degree in Kathak dance from Khairagarh University, India, followed by a post-diploma from Kathak Kendra Delhi and a Visharad in classical vocal from Bhatkhande Institute Lucknow. Her thirst for knowledge led her to Indira Kala Vishwidyalya, where she delved into researching the therapeutic dimensions of dance, exploring its potential as a tool for healing and self-expression.

Her artistic prowess has graced many solo performances nationwide and internationally, captivating audiences with her impeccable technique and emotive storytelling. Notably, she participated in ‘Anvarat’, a tribute to Kathak legend Padma Vibhushan Pt. Birju Maharaj, alongside her disciples, showcasing the legacy she continues to carry forward.

In 2004, Shikha Khare embarked on a new endeavor by founding her own organization, ‘Saniddhya’. Here she combines various roles of performer, director, choreographer, teacher, scholar, actor and social worker.

Beyond merely imparting training to aspiring artists, her forum’s activities extend to serving underprivileged children, emphasizing the therapeutic dimensions of Kathak. This holistic approach reflects Khare’s belief in the transformative power of art to heal and uplift of communities.

Her dedication and service was marked by the prestigious ‘SHE’ award bestowed upon her on International Women’s Day, presented by Noida Lok Manch ‘Pehla Kadam’.

The She Awards 2024, held under the collaborative auspices of the manch and a noida mall, provided a platform to celebrate the achievements of exceptional women like Shikha Khare. The event, coinciding with Women’s Day, served as a fitting tribute to the indomitable spirit and contributions of women across various spheres. Present on the occasion were City Magistrate, Dharmendra Kumar; Police Commissioner Noida, Vidyasagar Mishra; and CEO of Kailash Hospital, Dr. Uma Sharma.
