International Road Federation India chapter meeting was held on 30th August 2024 for the adoption of technology for better traffic management and road safety. The orga-nizer was Mr KK Kapila the founder President resident of a 9A 3rd floor Green Park Main.
After introduction of the honourable speakers by Mr KK Kapila, founder President – IPS Special Commissioner of Delhi Traffic Police, Mr Ajay Chaudhry, a highly honoured personality with President’s and Governor’s medals for his meritorious services in various fields, spoke. He stressed on convincing the public and drivers, by videos and photographs, that traffic rules are for their safety. Today everything has to be taught and enforced by penalties like challan and imprisonment. Poorly maintained roads are another contributing factor for accidents.
Dr. S. Velmurugan- Chief Scientist CRRI (Central Road Research Institute) and TES (Traffic Engineering Safety) division at CSIR. He has handled World Bank sponsored projects, NAHI and various PWD Projects for conducting road safety audits covering 18000 kilometers. He spoke on ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) by Deployment of AI powered advanced driver assistance system so that he gets FCW (forward collision warning)’ PCW(pedestrian collision warning). HMW(headway monitoring warning) and LDW( lane departure warning).
Driver’s training helps especially in bus driving. ADAS gives us accurate data collection i.e. road network, FIR, and black spot location (5 accidents or 10 fatalities occurring within 500m distance during the last 3 calendar years is identified as BLACK SPOT). Helps us in finding solutions . Public awareness, 30 days course – teaches human error correction, follow traffic rules and First aid training etc.
Mr. Ravi Kumar has 30 years experience in BEL (Bharat Electronic Ltd), heads the D&E and SCB unit. He has been instrumental in the design and implementation of major traffic management and smart city projects. He referred to ISSUES ON HIGHWAYS – 1) overweight trucks resulting in road damage, 2) deaths in road accidents, 3) pedestrians safety, 4) health hazard due to uncovered mining vehicles, 5) rash driving 6)over speeding 7) vehicle counting for planning, 9) ANPR for vehicle identification.
Some solutions are met by roadways sensors by providing – 1) automatic vehicle identification, 2) weigh in motion, 3) speed detection, 4) journey time monitoring, 5) environmental sensors, 6) pedestrian monitoring LIDAR camera. Hindrances are dust due to mining trucks, high temperature, heavy wind, drunken driving, unmarked road crossing, fluctuating power supply, lightening and surges, theft issues, fiber break down due to public works and poor lighting at night
Now research is on to find solutions for these challenges.
