Independence Month Special – Veterans In Conversation

As we commemorate Independence Day, it remains essential to pay homage to the sacrifices and unwavering commitment of our veterans who have dutifully served in the armed forces.

Two veterans from AOH, Colonel Girish Kumar Mendiratta (7231) and Lt Colonel Sanjiv Haldia (9231), share their experiences and perspectives on the significance of this day.

Colonel Mendiratta hails from a family with a military heritage. With a 32-year service in the Indian Army, encompassing the Kargil War and counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir, he comprehends the true essence of sacrifice and patriotism.

Colonel Mendiratta describes a sense of pride and honour upon unfurling the national flag or witnessing it billow in the sky. “Military service extends beyond profession to become an unwavering commitment, where one willingly places their life on the line for the nation’s well-being.”

Lt Col Haldia, a second-generation army officer, emphasizes that the military represents not merely an occupation but a way of life. He recollects the unique camaraderie and memories shared with his fellow soldiers, transcending differences of caste, creed, religion, or rank.

Lt Col Haldia asserts,”The values instilled within the armed forces, including prioritizing the nation’s welfare and upholding integrity in word and deed, continue to resonate with veterans long after they retire.”

Both veterans underscore the military life demands and the arduous training they underwent. They stress the imperative of conflict preparedness, as evidenced by the Indian Army’s history of participating in four wars.

Colonel Mendiratta emphasizes the necessity for civilians to recognize the multifaceted role of the armed forces beyond ceremonial spectacles, acknowledging their continuous training and preparedness for potential crises.

Reflecting on their transition from military to civilian life, both veterans acknowledge initial challenges while also citing the advantages derived from their military upbringing. Colonel Mendiratta, having joined a training-focused company, found adapting to civilian life comparatively smoother.

Colonel Mendiratta says, “I encourage the younger generation to dedicate itself to the country & contribute to its progress.”He emphasizes that their dedication and patriotism hold significance for India’s future.

This Independence Day, let us honour our veterans’ sacrifices. Their narratives and insights serve as a reminder of the devotion, steadfastness, and love for the nation that we should all aspire to embody.
