22nd May is celebrated worldwide as ‘The International Day for Biodiversity’. The suggested theme for this year’s commemoration was “From Agreement to Action: Building Back Biodiversity.”
Biodiversity’ is a combination of the words ‘bio’ relating to living organisms and ‘diversity’, meaning variety. It is the natural world around us consisting of a variety of all different kinds of organisms – plants, animals, insects, and microorganisms that live on our mother Earth, working together harmoniously in ecosystems to maintain and support life on Earth.
Biodiversity benefits businesses and provides livelihood as many people are engaged in agriculture, forestry, beekeeping, dairy farming, restoration of natural landscapes, and monumental buildings. Biodiversity ensures health and food security: millions of species work together to provide us with a large variety of fruits, vegetables, and other essential things for life. Biodiversity provides nature-based solutions that save us from Natural disasters such as floods and storms, global warming, Protecting and restoring natural ecosystems is vital to fight climate change issues. but they are increasingly under threat. The alarming rate of species extinction, habitat loss, and degradation poses a significant threat to biodiversity It is high time we should come into action and work together to restore and safeguard the precious biodiversity of our planet. Acknowledging the benefits of biodiversity is the first step in ensuring that we look after it. As a society, we should protect it and in doing so, we protect our own long-term interests The purpose of this article on the occasion of International Day for Biodiversity Diversity is to raise awareness about the challenges being faced and to make efforts and take action to protect and conserve biodiversity, understanding its importance and its crucial role in sustaining life on Mother Earth.
