“I’m Looking for a Community Solution To This Nuisance of Noise Pollution Rather Than A Mom & Pop Jugaad”, says a Resident

A dialogue on the whatsapp group started when a resident posted on 16 Dec ‘Folks, I wonder how many of us in the Sector realise the disadvantages of noise pollution, when we ourselves allow miscellaneous vendors into the sector, who shout at the top of their voices. You may not realise this, but this dependence upon convenience of all of us, is a cause of so many hearing and psychological and physical problems that affect our functioning in the long run, including insomnia, hypertension and diabetes that is scientifically proven. Please do give this menace a thought and how we may handle this at a Sector level…’

Reacting to this post another resident reacted “I fully agree. The garbage collection van is the biggest noise menace, with music and voice at max volume, just the most disgusting noise in the morning, feels like a village not a sector. I have seen like them in Sectors like Sec-44 or Sec-15 A, they go around silently or with just a beep noise, the RWA has banned loud music and announcement for them, let’s start there.

Another resident blamed the RWCS by saying that it is least concerned about the noise Pollution. It’s causing harm to the peaceful life of this sector. Uncontrollable entry of honking vehicles is adding fuel to the fire. Narrow lanes and heavy vehicles too are a big problem.

RWCS president then reacted and said, “I’m surprised to know that person living on main road facing sector 25 where day & night there is sound of traffic and is not disturbed but is disturbed when the Garbage collection Van comes. If the sound is completely stopped, half of the residents will complain that their garbage is not collected because they didn’t know when the van came and went.

The residents reactions didn’t end there another resident started blaming the vendors and wrote: “At least subjiwalas, you can ask them not to speak loudly.”

Some residents in past have complained about disturbance as his neighbours clean utensils at 2 am in the morning.

Another resident said that his neighbor’s child learning music all night preparing for a realty show.

In another case senior citizens keep their TV sets at full volume watching serials late night because they are hard of hearing.

The most hilarious case was of a resident of Delhi who was so upset that he published following advertisement in the Times of India which read: ‘COMPLAINT: Mr. Singh, this is Shubham Jain from Kailash Colony (one of your neighbours). I hear by request you to keep your voice down coz I don’t want to hear about your brother who took all your property & please stop playing loud music as I have meetings to attend. Even though I won air pods by playing bid blast on CRED store but they are of no use to me coz no device in this world can cancel your irritating voice. If you are reading this pls shift to another city.

In our sector the Noise and dust pollution is maximum on the outer periphery of our sector. We are exposed to heavy traffic flowing throughout the day on all sides especially on the Flyway and on the Kailash Hospital side. Most of the residents have probably got used to this so much that they have become dead to the outside noise and they care less how it is affecting their health. At least, in this case the RWCS can take up with the Noida authority to put sound barriers all along the flyway as was done in Delhi on the request of residents of Vasant Vihar
However, the resident is not wrong in saying that he is looking for a community solution to the problem rather than just a jugaad.

It will be nice if there is a Collective consciousness among all the residents regarding curbing Noise Pollution. Collective consciousness means, a set of shared beliefs, ideas, and moral attitudes which operate as a unifying force within a society.

As a community, we can be conscious regarding the usage of Honks, TV Volume, keeping our voice low while making a conversation, low volume of music during community events and parties at home, etc. RW&CS could request the vendors to reduce their voice volume and Garbage Van could also be told to reduce the volume. This way when we work collectively as a community, things could become much better.
