Rising Incidents of Harassment by Transgender Groups Raise Concerns in B Block

Residents of B Block are raising alarm over the increasing number of harassment cases involving transgender groups. While the traditional practice of

seeking money during significant occasions is well understood, the aggressive demands and misbehavior reported in recent incidents have left many families feeling distressed and vulnerable.

In a recent incident, Ashok, a resident of B Block, was reportedly harassed by a group of transgender individuals who demanded Rs.1 lakh after his son’s wedding. When Ashok attempted to negotiate a lower amount, the group allegedly resorted to threats and intimidation.

As per reports, Ashok’s family is still in shock, and the dispute remains unresolved despite multiple interventions.

Similarly, V.K. Sharma of B-172B is believed to have faced something similar after his daughter’s marriage. Apparently, when he offered Rs.2,100 as a goodwill gesture, the group demanded a much higher amount, causing a lot of trouble and discomfort for the family.

They are not alone, as others have also encountered a similar issue. Jayant Coomar of B-317 recounted an incident when his 86-year-old father was alone at home, and a transgender group entered demanding money. “They refused to leave even though there was no occasion to warrant their visit,” Coomar was quoted in one of the groups.

Rakesh Narang, a resident of B 182, shared how they were pressured to pay Rs. 50,000 during house construction. “I had to borrow Rs. 25,000 from a friend to meet their demands,” the resident lamented. Narang said that he still gets emotional while recounting that incident. “I have nothing against them, but they can’t pressurize us like this. I still get tears when I talk about that day.”

B-277 resident Girish Aneja, who has faced similar harassment, emphasised the importance of awareness programs. Remembering a similar harrowing experience of dealing with the transgender group a year ago, he opined, “Residents need to know their rights and how to handle these situations. Education is key to building a harmonious community.”

Aneja offered the following suggestions for the RWCS:

1. Uniform Shagun Amount: Establishing a standard amount for traditional alms to ensure fairness and prevent undue pressure.

2. Authentic Representation: We need to identify who is the legitimate transgender to give Alms.

In our religion, they all agree that their blessings have been considered auspicious for ages. There is even a belief that transgender people are descendants of Lord Shiva in the Ardhanarishvara form (half man and half woman). As Hindus, we believe that their blessings bring prosperity, while their curses can bring misfortune. But at what cost remains a big question mark?
